I am looking for a song that was played in the late 80's, maybe 90 or 91 too.  It had no lyrics.  It is not Axel F or Hooked on Classics.  I think there was a lot of guitar solo throughout the song.  The song is sort of long.  I heard it on regular pop stations and even though it had no lyrics, it was quite popular.  It is an upbeat song.

It would be hard for me to name or guess this song as first it is an instrumental one and I would not be so sure of my answer as there's no lyrics to work on, you know. Your clues are also vague. But checking on popular instrumental songs from that span (late 80's to early 90's) just gave me a few titles (excluding KENNY G songs and other non-rock/pop tunes):

GRACE by QUINCY JONES (1984)
ROCKIT by HERBIE HANCOCK (1984 - with some spoken part and record scratching)
AXEL F by HAROLD FALTERMEYER (1985)
MIAMI VICE THEME by JAN HAMMER (1985)   
PUMP UP THE VOLUME by M/A/R/R/S (1991)
LILY WAS HERE by DAVID A. STEWART with CANDY DULFER (1991 - pop with sax solos)

If the tune was not released as a single then we have a long list to look on. Artists usually released a track or two from their albums like COSMIC THING from THE B-52s (1989) or AEROSMITH's THE MOVIE (1987).
