AnswerDear Raul,
Sorry for the delay. Got lots of letters to answer.
OK, here we go! There's your answer in the chorus - STREET BEAT. It's by an artist familiar to us from another song - TONI BASIL - regarded by many as a one-hit wonder. Yes, she's the same TONI BASIL who gave us MICKEY, a song she took to #1 on the Hot 100 Chart back in December 11, 1982.
As additional info, TONI BASIL, who was born ANTONIA CHRISTINA BASILOTTA on September 22, 1943 in Philadelphia is a musician, actress and choreographer. Her recording career began in 1966 with a rare one-off single for A&M Records, the title song from the film, BREAKAWAY b/w with 28 written by Graham Gouldman. It wasn't until 1981 that she recorded a follow-up this time with Chrysalis Records, MICKEY from her debut album WORD OF MOUTH, its video directed by herself showed him as a cheerleader in a Las Vegas High cheerleader's uniform, incidentally her HS alma mater. The song is in fact a cover of KITTY, a 1979 release by the UK band RACEY. MICKEY itself would be covered in a parody by WEIRD AL YANKOVIC as RICKY in 1983. BASIL's filmography includes PAJAMA PARTY (1964), EASY RIDER (1969), FIVE EASY PIECES (with JACK NICHOLSON) & THE LAST MOVIE (with DENNIS HOPPER). BASIL wasn't so lucky with her follow-up single SHOPPIN' FROM A TO Z. Her 1983 album TONI BASIL stiffed and could only produced the minor hit OVER MY HEAD (Hot 100, #81, February 18, 1984) that would make BASIL not a one-hit wonder. STREET BEAT is from this album as well, but not released as a single except in the Philippines where it was a big hit in 1984. BASIL returned to her earlier careers taking occassional acting roles and choreographing for films. Among her notable assignments as choreographer were DELIRIOUS (1991), THAT THING YOU DO! (1996) and LEGALLY BLONDE (2001) & LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED, WHITE and BLUE (2003).
Maraming salamat po!
