The song you're looking for is "Steppin' Out" by Joe Jackson. The lyrics are as follows:
Now -
The mist across the window hides the lines
But nothing hides the colour of the lights that shine
Electricity so fine
Look and dry your eyes
We -
So tired of all the darkness in our lives
With no more angry words to say
Can come alive
Get into a car and drive
To the other side
Me babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
You babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
We -
Are young but getting old before our time
Well leave the t.v. and the radio behind
Dont you wonder what well find
Steppin out tonight
You -
Can dress in pink and blue just like a child
And in a yellow taxi turn to me and smile
Well be there in just a while
If you follow me
Me babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
You babe - steppin out
Into the night
Into the light
Hope that helps. :)

When I was music director at a college radio station in '84, there was also a little-known electro-metal band in the early 80's called "Spyz" with a tune entitled "Into the Night".. excellent song & album that I cant find today.

It took me a couple hours of Google searching, but I used lyric fragments to eventually nail down the song that, admittedly, plays in my head every so often too. One of those childhood memory things...
Song: "Steppin' Out"
Artist: Joe Jackson

THANK YOU! I have had this song going through my head for the better part of 18 months. I heard it in a Dallas CVS pharmacy, but never got the name or the artist. My friends mock me by humming it, reminding me that I can't find the title.
At last. Sweet Jesus, I can rest!

I absolutely love this song but could never find out who sang it. For the past 2 yrs., I would turn on a radio station and it would always be just ending. My many internet searches failed until tonight.
Funny thing is, I called my sister after I found out and hummed the song just to see if she recognized it. She immediately responded, "The lyrics go something like: 'me babe, stepping out.....'. Heh heh
I couldn't help but laugh at the irony.

If your lyrics are off by one letter, as I suspect, the song for which you're looking is actually Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out" from -- you guessed it -- 1982.
