Question Good morning Terry,
I am a male from Romania and 7 month ago i had unprotected insertive (she sucked me)oral sex with a prostitute. The doctor diagnosed me after 2 weeks with urethritis but my chlamydia and syphilis tests came back negative...sa he thought it was probably a kidney problem ( mostly because it didn't go away with antibiotics). I had a major concern about hiv but i talked to an infectious diseases md who said that i'm overreacting and concluded that i don't necesarily need a test...i also freaked out because i had strange sympthoms like a subfebrile ( 37,2 C) and now after 7 month got a sore throat...can you please tell me if the risk is that big to get concerned? and if there was any documented case of hiv being transmitted this way because the info is very contradictory...thank you very muc h and greetings from Romania... i also can mention that all my cbc test are normal except a slight calcium deficiency
Answer Dear Andrei:
Peace and all good things to you. I had the pleasure of spending time in Romania, in Constanza, where there are great works underway by Romanian physicians and staff working with the Baylor Pediatric group from the US. I am honored that you write, and will be of what help I can.
I need recommend you to talk with your personal physician; not quite the same as speaking with an Infectious Disease specialist in conversation. As he notes, your risk is very low, and while you may be over-reacting from the standpoint of infectious diseases, you seem clearly to be worried enough about this that a test might be in order for your peace of mind. Again, anything offered here is not intended to replace or interfere with your relationship with your primary care provider.
