Question
We in Bosnia are totally uninformed about HIV transmitting, so I would like to ask, may I shake hands with someone who is infected by HIV? I it (HIV) transmitting by shaking hands?

Thanks for the question. As you mentioned that some in Bosnia are totally uninformed about HIV transmission, I have presenting a brief picture of HIV transmission:

HIV can be transmitted from an infected person to another through:
• Blood (including menstrual blood)
• Semen
• Vaginal secretions
• Breast milk

Blood contains the highest concentration of the virus, followed by semen, followed by vaginal fluids, followed by breast milk.

Activities That Allow HIV Transmission
• Unprotected sexual contact
• Direct blood contact, including injection drug needles, blood transfusions, accidents in health care settings or certain blood products
• Mother to baby (before or during birth, or through breast milk)

You can't get AIDS from. . .
• Kissing; unless both partners have large open sores in their mouths, or severely bleeding gums, there is no transmission risk from mouth-to-mouth kissing.
• Sneezing, coughing, sharing glasses/cups or musical instruments.
• You also can't be infected in swimming pools, showers or by sharing washing machines or toilet seats.
• Shaking hands or embracing an infected person
• Living in a same room
• Sharing a common bathroom
• From insects
• Injecting with sterile needles
• Protected sex; if an unbroken latex condom is used properly and consistently
