AIDS - HIV from minor scratch

Expert: Gorkey Gourab - 7/29/2009

Question
Hi Gaurab
I am worried since past 5 days. I visited a not so decent strip club here in New York. I was kind of drunk and was wearing shorts. I sat on a chair which had a pointed metal edge which was poking out of the seat. It caused me minor scratch on my thigh, I immediately realized that I have hurt myself. but since I was drunk I could not realise the gravity of the situation.
Next morning I thought about the HIV transmission possibility just because the club may have been visited by sexually careless people (potentially infected with HIV) and someone like that might have hurted him/herself on that damned chair. I dont know how long the chair was vacant before I sat on it. Just for the information the temperature inside the club would have been between 19 celcius and 27 celcius. I dont think I bled much from the wound, but after 2 days I can see a crust formation which usually happens in case of bleeding.
Please reply , I cant sleep at all . Is thier a chance of getting HIV like this , when should I get myself tested ??

Thanks

Worried Guy

Answer
Dear worried Guy,

Reviewing your situation, i do not think you have much to worry about possible HIV infection. There are no known cases of HIV infection from chair scratch. The HIV virus outside host body live for only 15-30 seconds, so there is no need to worry . Just relax. You are fine.

Regads,

Gorkey
