Question
Hi,I have recently been having tratment for a hiv/aids phobia of which I am not proud. My therapist has advised me to ask experts for help with certain points of the phobia, so here goes. I have a big issue with pubic hair, for example if using a public toilet and there is some on the seat I can not go, even if I was to remove the public hair I would woory about the seat. Is there any risk of hiv from loose pubic hair if you understand me. One that is unattched to a person! Say you were sitting in a public place and  you accidently put your hand on one I would feel revolted and the need to go home change all my clothes and shower. I even have a problem with the place a pubic hair has been but has been cleared away - for example if you found one on your clothing that was  not yours would the clothing be a risk factor after you had removed it? Sorry this has rambled on a bit. I am very embarresed about my issues and it has taken me a long time to ask for help but I feel that education is the key.
Best Wishes Beth

Answer
Hi Beth,

There is nothing for you to be embarrassed or ashamed about getting help for your problem. As news media report new illnesses, everyone tend to react differently. This is especially true when the media fails to provide detailed information to help guide the public regarding an illness. This is a factor that creates unnecessary fear that may increase the risk of obsessive compulsive reactions.

That being said... pubic hair cannot transmit HIV. ZERO... ZIP... NONE!

Don't be ashamed to ask. This will help guide you to better understand and fight your fears. It is better to know than not to know.
