Question
Hello- A friend of mine is very worried, she didn't use protection and had intercourse with a man whose HIV status is unknown to her.  He did not ejaculate.  Is her risk of contracting HIV high?  Thank you very much.

Answer
Hi Sally,

There is always a risk of contracting any sexually transmittable infections (STI) when having unprotected intercourse. The only way she can definitely state that she was not infected with HIV is to have an HIV test done 3 months from the date of the sexual encounter.
