Question
Hi,
Thanks for all your help on this site. After an occupational exposure almost  2
yrs ago I have found myself obsessing over HIV! I think that whatever i do will
involve it's transmission. EVERYDAY, there are 2-3 things that get me
questioning about a possible exposure, today my obsession is acquiring HIV
from vaginal contact with the washer and dryer. I was naked and went to put
clothes in the washer and my vagina with no undies hit thee washer. Now i
am sitting here freaking out that what if from 12 hrs ago when the handyman
was over fixing some bulbs next to the washer got some hiv blood from his
finger from doing work onto this washer and now i touched it and i may have
hiv! Mind you, i  have no clue what his status is and if he touched it and my
husband and i only live here. Please feel free to call me crazy and tell me i
need help!
Am i at risk? Please help a poor soul!
Thanks so much!

Answer
Dear Jess:

Peace and all good things to you.  HIV cannot be transmitted in the ways you describe, as the virus need be present in fluid cells in sufficient concentration, amount, and have a more direct route of entry to your system than a casual contact or "indirect exposure; that information is provided to help you deal with and realize the lack of significant risk in the presenting fear and your question.

On the broader issue, I would guess there are other stressors in your life that are causing you to have this obsession about HIV, and certainly encourage you to talk with a counselor or your physician for a broader evaluation and relief of this anxiety.

Best to you and yours in health and all things.
