Question
Dear Terry, i was having a protected said with a sex worker. In the process we were having oral sex, and i swallow some of her vaginal fluid. If there's no cut in my mouth and throat will i be able to contract HIV if she's HIV +ve?

Thanks

Answer
Dear John:

Peace.  Vaginal fluids can transmit HIV.  They can also transmit other infections.  I don't have isolated data on the relative risk specific to performing oral sex on a woman, but this has long been known - along with the sharing of 'sex toys' - as a risk behavior.  Breaks in the skin and mucous membranes of your mouth are sometimes difficult to assess, as they may include such common conditions as bleeding after flossing and brushing.

"Protected" sex is reduced risk sex - latex can be used as a barrier when performing oral sex as well, hence flavored dental dams and condoms.

I recommend that you find a health professional and/or voluntary counseling and testing site and sit down with the counselor to discuss risk, risk reduction, and be tested for HIV and other infections which are more easily transmitted.  Knowing is much better than guessing or speculating, and face to face allows you opportunity to be tested.

The best to you and yours, and good health now and in the future.

Terry
