Question
I fingered a girl and I had bitten my nail off to short 8 hours earlyer.  no bleeding but it was sore and tender.  I hade a test a 4 weeks after haveing a sinus infect for a while and now at 8 weeks im still scared, never had a fever, but havejust developed a sore neck after moving not sure if it is stres related of what.  am i still at risk.

Answer
Dear John:

Peace.  The risk from contact with vaginal secretions increases with a break in skin, sounds like your finger was at least partially healed; I assume the "test" to which you refer is an HIV antibody test four weeks after your exposure to potentially infectious fluids; testing again at 8 weeks would yield a more reliable result.  It is bad practice to try to assess HIV infection from symptoms; a test of your fluids for HIV antibody is an inexpensive and more reliable method.

While I do recommend you see a counselor or health provider and be tested, I would also note that you have some factors working in your favor - the number of times you may have been exposed is low, the skin on your finger is thicker than in other places, and because it was not bleeding, there was some barrier between the fluids and your bloodstream.

I hope this helps, best to you and yours.
