Question
A few weeks ago i had protected insertive anal sex with an HIV positive person.
The condom did not break or slip off. Is there any chance that i will get HIV?
Right after i had sex i had some anxiety and fear. Do i need to be worried?

Answer
Dear Steve:

Peace.  If "protected" means an intact latex barrier between yourself and your partner at all possible exposures to blood and semen, and because you were insertive versus receptive (therefore able to monitor the condom) your risk is relatively low.

Be aware that putting a latex condom on after erection but prior to producing or encountering semen, blood, or vaginal secretions, ensuring that the condom covers all potentially exposed areas, and removing the condom before losing the erection so as to prevent release of your fluids... these steps are important to follow but sometimes difficult, especially in the heat of arousal.

Do you need to be worried?  No.  You seem apparently aware of your risk and report taking the precautions you felt were sufficient.  I encourage you to go to sites such as www.thebody.com and others so as to learn about and incorporate effective risk reduction into your relationships.  I would recommend, as I do to all, that you establish a relationship with an HIV counselor or health care provider so as to be informed as to your HIV status.

Best to you and yours,

Terry
