Question
in excel there is an add-on to transfer the data on the open worksheet (ie not transfer to a file).  this is very similar to the display option of the as400 data transfer but the data is displayed on the active worksheet.

my question is can i do this programatically rather than through the download from as400 add-on.

This is actually out of my expertise area (I'm mainly hardware oriented), but I have worked with the Excel download on occasion, so maybe I can point you in the right direction. When you say you want to do this 'programmatically', are you referring to running a program or batch file on the PC to transfer the file?  If so, look into the RTOPCB and RFROMPCB commands. These have several parameters that will allow you to transfer data to/from the 400.
