Subject: Restoring system on another AS/400

Question
QUESTION: As a part of 'Disaster Recovery Backup Plan' I wanted to restore our system to another AS/400. We are at OS V5R3M0. Any help or steps/instructions to follow is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Rashid;
I have done this as part of a D/R plan or just system upgrades at least 100 times.  The first thing you need is a copy of the V5R3 Backup and Recovery Guide (SC41-5304-07).  If you don't have one in hard copy, I think it can be downloaded from IBM.

You will need a backup tape(s) from your current system (SAVE 21).
I assume the D/R system is similarly configured to the production system and has enough disk space and a compatible tape drive.

Start with Checklist 20 on page 93. It will refer you other chapters. Some of the sections are a bit wordy-read them carefully. You will probably be able to skip a number of steps if they do not pertain to you. A little hint-at Task 9 in Checklist 20, go to page 108 and use Checklist 25 to restore all the user information. After the restore finishes, check the joblog. It is not uncommon to have objects not restore on the first pass. (logical/physical file mismatches). The easiest solution is to run a RSTLIB *NONSYS with MBROPT *NEW. This will only restore the 'missing' objects.

Once the restore is complete, you will most likely need to reconfigure comm line/ethernet/etc resources to match up to the descriptions. WRKHDWRSC *CMN will show you the available hardware resource names.

The backup/DR system will now be configured identically to the production system (same name, IP address, etc). If this system is at the same location as your production system, DO NOT connect it into the live network-it will cause conflicts.  If you are at another site, it should not be an issue.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Hi Pete,

First of all thank you so much for your generous help.

The restore is at another location. I am referring IBM's guide SC41-5304 Appendix D Page 513 'Recovering your server to a different server'.

I have the SAVSYS option 21 backup tapes ready.

At the remote location, do we need to do manual system IPL, insert the backup tape, SELECT D (for tape or CD) and restart *YES.

My guess this should install LIC and initialize system, Use DST QSECOFR/QSECOFR, install OS/400 V5R3M0, restore user profiles, configurations, user libraries, system libraries, DLO, devices, authorities, powerdown system and IPL.

Do we need to install any current PTF?

I appreciate all help.

Thanks
Rashid

Answer
You 'one-upped' me! I forgot that section was back there. It's for more experienced users, but that's the right one to use if you are comfortable using the commands.

Yes, a manual IPL D from the SAVE 21 tape is how you start. Follow the steps and you should be fine. Personal preference-I set Prompt for command to 'Y' (page 526, step 30). This allows me to make changes to to the options if I want and also 'SysReq' into the restore to check messages. You will need to 'babysit' the restore this way, but I usually stay around to watch it anyway. Either option works.

As for PTF's, whatever you have on the production system will be restored. You only need to reinstall (step 33) if additional PTFs were loaded after the SAVE 21 was done.

Pete
