AS400 Mid Range/Advanced 36

Question
Hi ,
I recently brought a advanced 36 on ebay. Allthough it came with manuals, cables etc., when I go to sign on screen I need a user and password. I emailed the seller, who tried to contact the old MIS director but no one seems to remember what it is. Is there any default sign on or any way I can access this info so I can transfer my software and info onto this machine. As a last resort, can I change the hard drive? I would hate to make this investment a waste. Hope you can help.
Thanks
Eddie

Answer
Legally, under most circumstances, you must purchase a license to use IBM's operating system software before you can use the machine.  Your seller probably realizes this, and so is not giving you a password.  Usually, they cannot transfer the license to you without payment from you to IBM.  I would appeal to IBM - explain your situation, and ask for help.  If the purchase of licenses is a show-stopper, return the Advanced/36 to the seller.
