Question
What does the 400 in As400 mean?

Answer
The AS/400 is a line of computers within the System/3 family.  IBM assigned the '4' as a way of indicating that it was the next model in the line.  They may have assigned '400' instead of just '4' to allow themselves the flexibility of adding other related models - say, a 410 or a 420.  This line was followed by the iSeries line. Recently, IBM announced yet another new series of models called the I5 - and apparently chose '5' as the next sequential number after '3' and '400'.
