Question
I had an early abortion (5 weeks & 5 days) about a week ago, and when I had the procedure one of the forms said there is a risk of a "missed abortion". I just took a pregnancy test today to see if it would still come up positive and it did. Does this mean that the abortion didn't work? How long after an abortion will a pregnancy test come up negative to confirm that the abortion was successful? The doctor's office said I could come back in, but I am a busy professional, and when I went in for the procedure I was at their office all day for a 2 minute procedure. I really do not want to take another whole day off of work to get an ultrasound to confirm I am really no longer pregnant. Do I have any other options?

Answer
Dear Heather,
At this early stage, the pregnancy test should be faint positive or negative in another week. I would just check it again then.  Unless you are having continued or increasing pregnancy symptoms, there is no reason to suspect a continuing pregnancy.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
