About Pat G
Expertise
I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of six. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues.

Experience
I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.

Question
Hi, I recently had an abortion on Sep. 19 and ever since then my life has been different. I did all the check ups and I'm all right. I had my abortion on that friday and started birth control on that sunday. I had sex a month later right before i started my period but i use protection, he didn't come and i was on the pill and i didn't know i was starting my period. I stop because it hurt too bad and i know birth control doesn't really get into your system until after 3 months but now i have been having problems with diarheia and nausea. I also ran out of birth control because i had a sample pack and now i'm waiting on my period so i can start again. I strongly don't think i'm pregnant and it's not time for my period yet but are these just affects after abortion or what?

Answer
Hi, noel,

You didn't say what kind of abortion you had. That could be important.

The rule is that a woman is fertile 14 days before her period begins, so if you had sex the day before your period, it is unlikely you are pregnant. But you can learn more about how to tell your own fertility by going here:

http://fertilityuk.org/

The fact that sex now hurts also doesn't surprise me a whole lot. You could have had medical damage, or just the stress of undergoing an abortion could have affected your emotional response.

Now that you are taking a pill, I can't begin to guess what might be causing diarrhea and nausea, but you should go to a doctor and have this checked out. Also, you can try some things to alleviate these symptoms, and if this helps, it will tell you something about what may be causing it. For diarrhea, probiotics often help. For nausea, sipping ginger tea can be helpful. Also, if you are eating foods with monosodium glutimate or certain artificial sweeteners in them (check the ingredients if you don't know), that could cause diarrhea. It does in my case. Have you been taking any antibiotics? This can also cause diarrhea if you're not talking probiotics, and I should warn you that if you take an antibiotic AND the birth control pill, and have sex, you can get pregnant.

As for whether or not your abortion caused these problems, that is anybody's guess. No matter what method is used, it disrupts your delicate hormonal balance. You should have this checked out by a different doctor from the one you have been seeing.

Let me know what you find out. Good luck!
