About Pat G
Expertise
I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of six. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues.

Experience
I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.

Question
I had an abortion about 3 years ago with my ex. My present boyfriend and I are wondering if i can have babies because i did have an abortion in the past. We had unprotected sex for two weeks now and nothing happened. When i got pregnant before i was using birth control and now i am off of it. So my question is, is it possible to get pregnant again even though i had an abortion in the past?

Answer
Hi, Nico,

I don't know the answer to your question, and neither does anybody else. Some women who had abortions can't have children; the abortion damages the uterus or the openings to the Fallopian tubes. If the damage is across the openings, it depends on how much damage, but one thing to watch out for is tubal pregnancy (which is a medical emergency). The opening may be large enough for sperm, but not the egg. As for the uterus, if the abortion caused scarring where the baby tries to implant, it may result in early miscarriage. Even going to a doctor for an examination might not tell you whether you can. All you can do is try, and see what happens. On average, one abortion is said to render 14% of women incapable of conceiving any more children. I realize this isn't very helpful, but I hope it is more information than you had in the past. Another thing to keep in mind is that sometimes birth control used in the past can also make a woman sterile. Obviously in your case, that didn't happen at the time, but if you were using hormonal contraceptives, all bets are off. Every woman is different, and the question you are asking is about your own body. You can consult a doctor if you want, but don't be surprised if he cannot answer your question, either.
