About Pat G
Expertise
I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of six. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues.

Experience
I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.

Question
QUESTION: Hi Dr. I had a medical abortion done 5 days ago. (vacuum). Back then I was just 4 weeks pregnant I'm afraid the procedure did not work. Plus I did a home test today and  was positive. Also, my breast hurts a lot! The only thing the changed was the peeing part.. I do not have to go that often. Can you please tell me what are my chances to still be pregnant!??

ANSWER: Hi, Judy,

First of all, I'm not a doctor. Secondly, a medical abortion involves taking pills and takes several days. Vacuum involves a physical removal of material, done in a clinic, office, or whatever, and takes a few minutes. Or if the taking of pills doesn't work, you might get a followup of surgical abortion (vacuum). Abortion disrupts a woman's hormones. But it's only been five days, and that doesn't mean that you wouldn't still have high enough levels, sufficient to give a positive reading on a test, along with sore breasts, as before. On the other hand, the weight could simply have shifted, which would account for your not having to pee as often. You are asking questions about your own body, and no one can answer such questions over the internet, not even a doctor. So either wait and see, or go to a doctor and let him figure out what has happened.

Feel free to ask additional questions. I don't know if I can answer them, but I'll try.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Good Morning!

Thank you SO MUCH for your prompt answer.  I'm so sorry if I confuse you, but i'm new at this stuff.. So let me tell you that what I did was at a Dr. office and yes it was the vacuum procedure. And you're wright it has been just 5 days.. So maybe that's why I sill feel all those symptoms. I would like to ask one last thing.. Have you ever known of someone who have done this procedure and has failed (still pregnant after vacuum, maybe?..).  Thank you very much!

Answer
Hi, Judy,

You're very welcome.

It is possible to still be pregnant. Your abortion was done very early, and it is easy to miss the baby because she or he is so small. They won't usually even do one this early for that reason. I don't recall that I have personally talked to someone this happened to, but I know of such situations.

What do you think you will do if you discover you are still pregnant?
