About Pat G
Expertise
I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of six. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues.

Experience
I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.

Abortion - Pregnancy after abortion

Expert: Pat G - 9/3/2008

Question
QUESTION: hi Pat G, Is there any chance to get pregnant after abortion?

ANSWER: Hi, Thamie,

Yes, there is a chance of becoming pregnant after abortion. Abortion does impair fertility, so it may be difficult to impossible for some women, but not for others. It depends on what kind of damage abortion does. Abortion DOES cause damage.

Here are the things to look out for in particular:

1. tubal pregnancy. If there is scarring across the opening to the Fallopian tube, it may be possible for sperm to get through a smaller opening, but not an egg. It is possible that an ultrasound may show this, but don't count on it. If you feel acute pain at about six weeks or a little less, have it checked right away. If you feel this pain followed by sudden stopping of pain, get to the emergency room.

2. inability to carry a baby to term. Sometimes abortion damages the cervix so that it won't hold the weight of a bigger baby. The doctor can stitch the cervix shut temporarily to hold the weight. Without this, miscarriage or very premature birth can result. Very premature birth is a leading cause of cerebral palsy. So be sure and tell your doctor about your history, having had an abortion.

3. higher risk birth. A prior abortion can cause prolonged labor, or placenta previa. Placenta previa is when the placenta attaches near or over the opening to the cervix. It is a potentially life threatening condition for both mother and baby, and may necessitate a Caesarian section.

There may be other concerns, but these are the ones I know about.

Let me know if you succeed in becoming pregnant, and how it goes. Make sure before you do that you are in a position to take care of a baby, because some women try to have replacement babies (it may be subconscious), and if conditions haven't changed, they have another abortion.

Good luck!

QUESTION: after how long can i try being pregnant, after i did an abortion?

Answer
Thamie,

I don't know the answer to your question. You should go to a good doctor and let him check you over carefully. Don't go to the person who did the abortion. Go to someone else. If you had an abortion recently, give your body time to heal, but if you get pregnant anyway, whatever you do, don't harm yourself again. Good luck with this, and please let me know what you find out.

Hugs.
