Abortion - Sex after abortion

Expert: Dr. Harriet Johnson - 10/31/2009

Question
I had an abortion on October 17, two weeks ago. They told me
to not put anything in my vagina or have sex for one week. I was only 6 weeks pregnant at the time. I had sex with my partner today for the for the first time since. I have been on birth control for two weeks never missing a pill and taking the same time every day. Also, we used a condom, but it fell off and we didn't realize it until after. Has my birth control taken effect yet? What are the chances of me getting pregnant from the condom falling off? I am really worried and Would like to know..  Is there anything I can do now to help make sure that I am not gong to be pregnant again since this happened?I can't just go
back to the abortion clinic where I had the procedure because it is an hour and a half away. Any helpful advice would be great. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Brittany,

After 2-3 days of taking the pill, you will be protected from pregnancy, so you're definitely protected. You can take emergency contraception, which will stop the egg from fertilizing. I believe you will not become pregnant, however there is still a chance that you could be. Good luck!
