Abortion/Vaginal discharge after medical abortion

Question
Dear Dr Joan,

I had a medical abortion on 22nd of September, had the normal symptoms I read and was advised about. A few days ago I went to the bathroom and had see through, mucus type discharge, it had very tight, almost skin like but see though, with abit of brown blood on it. I am abit worried as it does not look like a blood cloth. During the course of two days I had 3 similar discharges, one big and others small. For two days now I haven't had anything. How normal is this? Further my right ovary is abit soar, but the slight pain comes and goes, could I be ovulating?

Answer
Dear Kerry,
It's hard to tell from your description, but the vaginal discharge sounds normal.  It sounds like you are passing some leftover "decidua" - the thin (but durable) tan connective tissue that initially forms in the cavity of your uterus before the pregnancy develops. Sometimes this does not pass completely when you start to bleed, and it continues to pass for days after the medical abortion.

Usually, the only thing to be concerned about after a medical abortion are: persistent bleeding, heavy bleeding, cramping (stronger than a period), or a discharge with a very foul odor. It doesn't sound like you are having any of these problems.

I hope this relieves your concerns,
Doctor Joan
