Abortion/13 days after and still heavy bleeding

Question
Hi,

I had a medical abortion on Nov. 23rd. I have been bleeding very heavily for the past 13 days. I went for my follow up visit on Tuesday and the dr said my abortion was complete and I was no longer pregnant but I was bleeding alot more than I should be. So she gave me two more of the pill to take this Saturday. I have a few questions:

1- is this amount of bleeding normal at this time?
2- Should I take the pills?
3- Is this a sign of infection?

Oh by the way I have no abdominal pain at all!

thanks for you help in advance,
ashley

Answer
Hi Ashley,

Very heavy bleeding is not normal after 13 days and is a sign of left over tissue in your uterus or infection. Your doctor should have given you pills to stop the bleeding, not more of the abortion pills as this will only make you bleed more. Take the pills, as this should expel any left over tissue that your doctor may have missed. If you continue to bleed heavily, go back to your doctor for an ultrasound.
