Abortion/Nervous for abortion...

Question
Hi Dr Joan. I live in Canada, and I'm having an abortion in two days and I'm very nervous. It's not the right time for me, so this is the right decision, but it doesn't change that I'm scared. I don't know what to expect at all. I was told that I could make an appt for counselling, but I didn't want to at that time. Now I'm kind of regretting it as it gets closer. I've even started getting nightmares. I really hate going to the doctor, and usually avoid going at all costs, so this is incredibly frightening. I'm guessing it's surgical, as I was told it will take about four hours. Why does it take so long? Will it hurt? How am I going to feel after? Will I be in pain?  Why does it say take a couple days off if you can? I do have support and my boyfriend is fantastic and will be there no matter what my choice might be. I've had no pressure, and only support, but I still feel sad and scared. Can you give me a little clarity? Thanks for your time

Answer
Dear Chelsey,
It's normal to be nervous about getting an abortion.  The good news is, that it is very safe, and common.  The abortion itself takes only 5 minutes.  Unfortunately, most clinics have you wait this long because of counseling and consents, labs, ultrasound, etc.  But you will be doing a lot of waiting, so maybe bring a good book or something to distract you.  The waiting is the worst part. You will probably have some kind of cramping after the procedure, but this should not last more than an hour or two, and then you should feel better. It shouldn't be bad pain.
If you don't want a surgical abortion, you can always consider the abortion pill (or you can always take a trip to New York City to see us!).  You can find more information at earlyabortion.com, earlyoptionpill.com, and gynpages.com.
I hope this is helpful and reassuring,
Doctor Joan
