Question
I had a surgical abortion January 21, 2009. I started birth control immediately following the procedure. I know your risk of getting pregnant again are higher so we had been using condoms in addition, but the condom broke. I took EC as an extra precaution because the doctor said my birth control wouldnt be immediately effective. What are my chanes of becoming pregnant again?

Dear Samantha,
There is almost no possibility that you could have gotten pregnant again.  Birth control that is started right after an abortion and taken correctly is effective immediately, so there should have been no concern that the condom broke.  The doctor was not up-to-date in their information, or was being extra-cautious.
