Abortion/getting pregnant after abortion, irregular periods after abortion

Question
Dear Sir, My husband and I are trying to conceive our second child after I had an abortion (absorbal)last Jan 08. as the baby did not fully develop. We have been trying for the past 4 months with no results and I fear it's because my periods are not regular any longer after the surgical procedure. They used to be very accurate every 29 days but since last year they come every 30 to 38 days, quite exaggerated I would say. My husband is now 41 and I am 31, I do not think there is nothing to worry about?? I've been writing down my menstrual dates on my diary since I was 12 and I know when I am due to ovulate, but this does not seem to work any longer. I now bought an ovulation test and had intercourse on my two fertile days, but it seems it has not worked as I am due to have my period in two days.
What can I do to get my period cycles back to normal? Will they ever be regular again? Is this common after an abortion?

Thanking you in advance

Carol

Answer
Hi Carol,
It sounds from your description that the time you are ovulating has changed.  I think you are doing the right thing by using an ovulation kit, and you may try having sex later in your cycle.  Try having sex around 14 days before your period is due.  I am not aware of abortion causing a change in ovulation and menstrual cycles - it may be coincidence, or more likely it is a change from your pregnancies.   There shouldn't be any problem in getting pregnant from the abortion itself.  If you get periods regularly (even though they have changed), the abortion should not have affected your fertility.
Keep trying and enjoy the process. It doesn't sound like there's anything to worry about. It often happens that when you try to conceive, it doesn't go as planned, and it will happen on its own time.  At 31, there's no rush.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
