Question
my pregnancy got miscarried 10 days back bcoz of lack of growth of baby, it was abortion with pills, i got bleeding only for 5 days. i had a follow with my doctor, she has not scanned with abortion was successful or not. but i am feeling that scanning is must for knowing whether abortion was successful or not

Answer
Dear Jaya,
If you were certain that you miscarried, an ultrasound is recommended, but not absolutely necessary.  An ultrasound is necessary when used in a situation of an unwanted pregnancy.  The ultrasound would confirm that the abortion worked and the pregnancy is gone or no longer viable.  In the situation of a miscarriage it is already known that the pregnancy wouldn't continue, so it's not as necessary.  Depending on how far you were, the doctor could assess the situaion by the amount of bleeding.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
