Abortion/unprotected sex and pregnancy tests after an abortion

Question
Hi there

I had a surgical abortion on the 12th Jan 2009, It has been 4 weeks since the abortion. One week after the abortion me & my partner have been have frequent unprotected sex about 2 times a week. I have not had a period. I also have no pregnancy symtoms what so ever

Could it be possible that I am pregnant again?
When should I do a pregnancy test?
How can I determine if it from the first pregnancy or a new one?

Thanks & look forward in your reply
Kim

Answer
Dear Kim,
By now, you can check a urine pregnancy test.  The hormones from a surgical abortion are usually gone 3 weeks later, though can often cause a "faint" positive pregnancy test for up to 6 weeks.  A pregnancy test turns positive about 10 days after the incident.  So, depending on when you last had sex, you can certainly check a pregnancy test.  If it is negative, and more than 10 days from when you had unprotected sex, then it is unlikely that you are pregnant again.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
