Abortion/Abortion - No period after two months.

Question
I have a bunch of questions & I`m wondering if you can help me a little with some answers. I had an abortion (I was around 5-6 weeks pregnant they said) this year on the 2nd of January. . . I began my birth control and ended up having sex (with condoms, but didn't use condoms a couple times) five days (the 7th) after the abortion. I know it wasn't smart, but my husband is in the military & well, we did. We continued having sex everyday until the 10th (when he had to leave again). There were a few times when the sex was unprotected, but I was on the birth control. I am wondering if I could be pregnant again? I'm scared because I haven't gotten my period since. I've had the symptoms for it, but it's been a no show. I am so scared I could be pregnant again, my stomach is beginning to feel hard like it did when I first detected that I might be pregnant some months ago. What should I do? I went to the gyn in february, but did not discuss the situation with them..they gave me a standard urine test but i don't know if that tests for pregnancy. I don't want anyone to know that I a) had an abortion or b) am pregnant (if so). I am legally married (because of the military) but no one except my parents know this. My wedding is in two months & my mom was at this appointment with me. I would be mortified if the doctor were to tell me that the abortion was incomplete or that I am pregnant all over again..Help? :/

I took a pregnancy test this past sunday, it came out negative.

Answer
Dear Liz,
As long as you started birth control right away after the abortion, it should have been effective immediately, so no need to worry.  In addition you have a negative pregnancy test, so that confirms that you are not pregnant.  In February when you saw the gynecologist, the urine test should have been negative from the pregnancy you ended in early January.
As far as why you haven't gotten your period yet - it could be from the abortion - I've seen it take as long as three months to get back in cycle.  It also could be from the birth control pills.  Many pills now are formulated to give women a "light period" and for some women it ends up being no period, or just spotting.  There is no need for concern.  I would just keep taking the pills as directed, and if you don't get your period in another month, you might want to switch brands.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
