I had a surgical abortion on March 20. I didn't really have any bleeding or cramping and I am an idiot. So I've had unprotected sex almost every day since. I went in about a week after and they told me I had an infection & out me on 7 days worth of antibiotics. I'm done w them. I've now been bleeding for three weeks. It is getting lighter but I am wondering when it will be over. Also I know pregnancy tests can be positive for several weeks after the procedure. I took one yesterday & it came back w a light positive. My questions are 1. When can I expect the bleeding to stop? 2. Does having sex make you bleed longer? 3. When can I get an accurate result on a pregnancy test?

Dear Stacey,

You should have been informed when you had the abortion that you should not have sex for 2 or more weeks for healing. I would advise you to go to your doctor, not the one who did the abortion, and have a check up. I can't tell you when the bleeding should stop but it's important to your health to not have extended bleeding. I would advise you to abstain from sex, ask your doctor about this. Also, you can ask the pregnancy test question to a pregnancy resource center.
