Question
i had an abortion on april 27, started orthro tri cyclen low on may 3 and had unprotected sex but practiced the pull out method on may 9. what are the chances of me being pregnant again? should I take the plan B?

Answer
Dear Sarah,
You should not have any concern about getting pregnant.  As long as you start birth control pills within a week of the abortion, they should be effective immediately.  You do not need a "back up" method, and you do not need Plan B.
FYI I have stopped prescribing OTC lo.  I see women coming into my office every week who are getting pregnant on this brand who are taking it correctly - I rarely or never see this with other brands.  I have reported it to the company, but they say it is not statistically significant.  So, this is anecdotal - but I would switch to another brand when you next have the opportunity.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
