Abortion/No periods after abortion

Question
Dear Dr.
I am writing to you because on march 11 I had an abortion and I was 9
weeks pregnant. I spotted a little bit on that day and the following day. I didn't
have much pain. Now two months later, I still have not gotten my period. My
body seems to have gone back to pre pregnancy state, but still no periods
are present. It isn't possible that I am pregnant since neither blood tests or
urine tests show that I am. I have been spotting for over 3 weeks now and
am not sure what the problem is. I was sent for ultrasounds and transvaginal
sono, but it appeared to be normal. I really want to have kids in the
futurenand the prospec of not being able to is scaring me. I would very much
appreciate your thoughts on this situation. Thank you so much.

Answer
Dear Stephanie,
It is common and normal not to get a regular period after an abortion.  Irregular spotting is completely normal. I have seen it take up to 3 months for women to get a period.  As long as you are not pregnant there is nothing to worry about.  If it goes longer than 3 months, you should consult a gynecologist.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
