Question
Hi Joan,
i had an abortion about 5 days ago and me and this guy
i have been seeing had protected sex 3 days after my abortion and the doctor
told me to wait 2 weeks. he said there was risks
for an infection from sex so early after, are these risks high?
I'm not sure if it was because of the sex or if its just my body but
i stopped bleeding the day after my abortion and then the day after
i had sex with this guy i started bleeding, i wouldnt say heavy, no clots,
but enough blood if you know what i mean, is it just on and off from the
abortion? or was it because of the sex?
one more question, do you have to go to thoughs check up appointments
after? like what do they do? because i just want this over with and i really
dont want to confront anyone anymore. i want to put it in my past.

Answer
Dear Taylor,
There is some debate about how soon you can have sex after an abortion, but in my opinion it is probably fine - the risks are very low.  Yes, the bleeding is probably from the sex, but that is not a bad thing - sex just stimulated your uterus to contract and expel any remaining blood.  This can happen on and off for the first few weeks and doesn't indicate any problem.  If they told you they were certain that the abortion was successful, and you are not having any symptoms and do not need help with getting started with birth control, you do not need to follow up at the clinic.
I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
