Question
Hi,

I had protected sex almost on a daily basis approximately 3 weeks after I had
my abortion (31/3). I guess because the fact that I got pregnant before sort
of affected me and my partner psychologically, we are constantly worrying
that we might get pregnant again. We have always used the withdrawal
method (without condom) and somehow got pregnant. After abortion we are
more careful, but when we had foreplay (before putting on the condom), he
had teased me using just the tip of his penis to touch the outside of my
vagina (for a few of the intercourse session). But after a couple of days, I felt
very paranoid that I will get pregnant again and I seem to find all the
symptoms of pregnancy (or maybe it was in the head). I took 3 pregnancy
tests, we restrained from having sex for 6 days and I took the third test after
the 5th day from not having sex, all of them are negative. This week is the
4th week after my abortion and I have not had my period yet. None of the
condom broke during the time we had sex, but I have thick white mucus
today.

Do you think I am pregnant??

Answer
Hi Ariel,
It would be highly unlikely to get pregnant from the foreplay describe, but I suppose it would be possible.  A pregnancy test turns positive around 2 weeks after an incident, so depending on the timing, it seems to me you are not pregnant.  Here is some more information on pregnancy tests after abortion: http://www.earlyabortionoptions.com/abortion-aftercare-faq.html

It is common and normal to have a delayed period after an abortion, so as long as you are not pregnant, there is nothing to worry about.  There is also a review of birth control methods on the same website, so maybe it's time to try something more secure.

I hope this is helpful,
Doctor Joan
