Question
Hello doctor I had an abortion in may about 3 months ago and I still have not received my period. I am really worried and want to know if anything could be wrong. Is this normal? or should I be alarmed?

Answer
Hello, Laura,

Please know that I am not a doctor. I am simply a person who has studied a lot and talked to a lot of women.

Having an abortion is not normal, so we can't talk about what is normal after an abortion. If you want to know if not getting a period for three months is common, on the other hand, let's just say that some women have complained about this. Abortion disrupts a woman's delicately balanced hormones, so anything is possible. Have you tested to see if you are pregnant? If you have had sex since the abortion, this is a distinct possibility. If you were still pregnant from before the abortion, you would most likely be aware of it, but if you aren't particularly thin, you might not notice some of the symptoms. You would most likely be at least four months along.

I suggest you test for pregnancy. If you still have questions after that, please see a doctor. He can do more extensive tests to determine what is going on with your hormones. Good luck with this, and please take care of yourself. Abortion is dangerous and can cause all kinds of damage. Let me know what you find out.

Expertise

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
