Abortion/Post abortion pregnancy

Question
On June 19, 2009 I had an aspiration abortion due to the fact I was raped after leaving a local bar. I was eleven weeks along. My husband and I are now trying to conceive a child of our own. Is it too soon? I've had some scant pinkish spotting. I did not have any complications after my procedure either. Any advice would be extremely helpful. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Hi, Daniella,

I don't know if it is too soon, but it always possible that a woman will never conceive again after one abortion. My heart goes out to you because you were raped, but usually abortion is not helpful.

You should see a doctor about whether it is too soon to try for a child. Normally, it's not reasonable to worry about not being able to conceive unless you have tried for a year. But most women who can, will conceive in that length of time. Hopefully, you will have a child soon. But you need to see a doctor to find out if you are OK, and it would be wise for you to become pregnant. You need to make sure there was no damage. Merely not having complications right away doesn't mean you didn't experience damage. Please take care of yourself, and let me know how things go.

Expertise

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
