Abortion/After Abortion Pill Clotting

Question
Hi Dr. Johnson,

On August 28th, I took the abortion pill. I was 5 weeks 2 days along. When I had my ultrasound, there was no fetal tissue visible and only a 'yolk sac.' After I took the second pills ~24 hrs later, I cramped, clotted, and bled very heavily. I proceeded to bleed for 8 days. When I returned 8 days after the abortion for my follow up, the ultrasound verified the pregnancy was gone and there was no mention of additional debris in my uterus.  Then I stopped bleeding for about 4 days and have begun bleeding again. Today is Sept 15 and I (for the past 6 days) have been bleeding and cramping heavily. I have been consistently passing quarter sized clots.  I have flooded a 'Super' tampon size in an hour at one point.

My question to you is this: is this normal? Is it ok to be bleeding this far after and for it to be very heavy and clotty? I am so scared. This was the hardest and worst decision I have had to make and although the pregnancy is something I will always think about, I hope the bleeding and clotting ceases soon because emotionally seeing that come out every time I use the restroom is emotionally exhausting and terrifying.

I appreciate you answering these questions for us out here. It is such a scary and lonely place where we are right now. There isn't anyone to help, ya know?

Thank you,

Liz.

Answer
Hi Liz,

It's not normal to bleed this heavy after an abortion. I suggest an immediate visit to your doctor and another ultrasound because heavy bleeding can indicate leftover tissue which can cause infection. From what you have described to me I think you may have an infection which would need to be treated soon before it becomes dangerous.
