Dr. Joan, my soon to be wife had an abortion a little over a month ago through the abortion pill which induces a miscarriage.It was the toughest decision of our life and feel it may have been the wrong answer for us...She bled heavy for a few days and ever since then it has hurt for her to engage in sexual activity. What can this be related to and is this cause for concern? Or is it possible she just hasn't healed up completely?

Answer
A medication abortion is a miscarriage.  The women passes the contents of the uterus over a a few weeks.  Having intercourse within the first week or so can cause pain and bleeding.  It has been four weeks, if she is still bleeding, she is still passing some of the uterine lining.  She  may need to have a follow-up exam to make sure she has passed all of the lining of the uterus, make sure she does not have an infection or have an ovarian cyst.

Also, she may have some anxiety about the abortion or getting pregnant again.  If you are using condoms, sometimes, there may be some vaginal dryness due to the hormonal changes.  Either way, a follow-up exam may be reassuring.
