Question
Hello Doctor Joan,

I'm 20yrs old.I'm from Australia and I'm new to this site. Anyway, its good to know that ur a very experienced doctor so I got a few questions regarding to my previous abortion. Hope u can help me with that.
I had a surgical abortion 8 weeks ago(on August 5th,2010). I bled for two weeks after surgery and it stopped after that. Then i had my period at the seventh week  (started from light bleeding to heavy bleeding)and it lasted for six days (from September 20th to Sep 26th). Anyway, I have been bleeding again (not really heavy bleeding) since yesterday (September 30th,2010)till now.I got a lower back pain and mild lower abdominal pain and I felt nausea, tired yesterday but Im feeling better today. It starts bleeding a bit, then stop and its starting bleeding again and again so right now im very scared and worried and I dont know whats going on?! I DID COME BACK TO DOCTOR FOR THE CHECK UP AFTER 3 WEEKS SINCE THE ABORTION AND HE SAID I'M FINE. Should I go to the doctor again for another check up? Could it be an infection? PLEASE HELP ME!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Tiffany

Answer
Persistent bleeding after an abortion can be due to your hormonal cycle returning to normal, a clot that has not passed or it could be due to a chlamydia infection.  Chlamydia is not relayed to the abortion.  It is a sexually transmitted infection.

You should just calm down and go have a check-up.  You can have an ultrasound and a cervical swab.  These two tests can rule out a retained clot or an infection.
