Abortion/period after abortion

Question
Hi Diane, I have had a vacuum abortion about 4 weeks ago. All through the 4 weeks, I had light brown/medium brown spotting. Then after a little more than 4 weeks, I found bright blood on my pantyliners and I was cramping a little. Thinking that this must be my period, I started taking birth control pills for the first time. However, the next day I had no discharge or anything until at night. I bled a little again so I took my second birth control pill. On the third day, I again woke up with no blood on my pantyliners and it only came at night. All this bleeding was very light such that I have no need to use a pad even.

Is this normal? Is that my period? Should I be worried? And should I carry on eating my birth control pills? Will they still be effective?

I look forward to your reply, it has been a bother on my mind. Thanks so much.

Answer
Dear J,

I would recommend that you get an opinion from your physician. I'm not a medical professional. I'm not sure if you should keep taking the birth control pills in this situation. Also, I do not recommend
taking any kind of hormonal birth control methods, of which the birth control pill is one. I can talk to you more about non-hormonal methods if you like. Please email me at CHERYL51@aol.com and put ALLEXPERTS in the subject line. Hope to hear from you soon.
