Abortion/Will I be able to get pregnant after several abortions?

Question
I am 25 years old and have had 4 abortions since the age of 20. I am now pregnant again for the 5th time. I am extremely dissapointed and ashamed with myself as I vow to be more careful each time but have proven to have not learnt from my previous mistakes. I am concerned about wheather I will be able to get pregnant when I am actually ready to have children. This will now be my 5th time in 5 years. I am really worried about the physical damage this might be causing me on the inside.

Answer
Hi Manal,
I understand your concern.
In Greece some years ago, contraception was very expensive; abortion was not.
I met women there who had over twenty abortions. They obviously were not concerned about their fertility.
I do not think that abortion should be a form of contraception, but when performed in a medical setting
by a doctor there is normally no influence on further fertility.
So do not worry too much. The uterus is a self repairing and cleaning organ.
Hope this answers your question.
Is an IUD a good idea for you ?
Bye for now,
Dr Shan
