Question
I had an abortion in October last year and was given an injectable contraceptive (petogen) which lasts for three months but i did not go for my second appointment. After the abortion my periods have been irregula untill they stopped and i have not had my periods for two months now. Is it normal and how long will it take for them to get back to normal again.

Answer
Hello, Anathi,

It is not uncommon for contraceptives to stop a woman's period, and the injectable contraceptives can be especially bad because you can't just stop taking them. Given the way your body's balance has been thrown out of whack, there's no telling when or if it will return to normal. If you want to give it a chance, stop using contraceptives. If you're not married, it's much safer to stop having sex. If you are married, you can learn to tell when you are fertile. If you chart faithfully, and don't use any drugs like that, it is the most reliable method short of complete abstinence. The other problem with contraceptives is that they alter the woman's body chemistry and make it a lot easier for her to catch a nasty disease. You really should have yourself checked.

So the only way I can answer you is to tell you to stop using contraceptives and wait and see. Hopefully, it will return to normal eventually, but nobody will be able to tell you when.

I hope this helps. Take care.

Expertise

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
