Question
hi

i had my first abortion in 2008 and the 2nd one this January, march i got pregnant again and had a miscarriage, now i desperately want a baby but i am scared of going through the pain of miscarriage again, my friends tell me its because of the abortion, will be able to have kids.

Answer
Hello, Phakama,

It is true that having an abortion (particularly a surgical abortion) increases the risk of miscarriage of a wanted pregnancy by 400%. This is because the process of forcing open a woman's cervix weakens it. The solution is for the doctor to fasten a woman's cervix shut until time of birth. At present, nobody knows what effect a pill abortion will have on the rate of miscarriage.

When you become pregnant, tell your doctor you have had two abortions, and ask him to teach you how to tell when you might have a miscarriage, and to watch you, and fasten your cervix shut if he needs to. This will also help safeguard from a very early birth, which can cause problems as well.

Other than that, try to take care of yourself, and try not to worry too much. My heart goes out to you because of your miscarriage. This is always a very painful thing, and most of us have lost a baby. I have. So I know what it's like. I hope and pray you will be OK. Let me know how you do.

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
