Abortion/positive pregnancy test after abortion

Question
Hi, I had a medical abortion on Aug 12, 2010. I was told I had a fibroid
tumor and needed to follow up with my regular ob/gyn so I did on sept
9 to find out my pregnancy test came up positive. I have been having
seriously painful cramps on my lower left abdominal side and seriously
painful tightness in my right breast. Should I be worried that the at
home is still showing a very light positive pregnancy test?  What would I
be having these cramps that cause me to double over?  I go back on Sept
23rd but I am seriously worried that there is something wrong.  Please
letter me know what I should do. Thank you!!!

Answer
It has been almost 6 weeks today since your abortion. On the the, you were 4 weeks.  The pregnancy test can be positive at that time.  At your follow-up,on the 23,  the test should be negative. If you continue with cramping, you should have an ultrasound.  One cause of pain can be a cyst on the ovary.  Sometimes these corpus luteum cysts can increase in size rather than shrink and cause pain on side of the abdomen.  An ultrasound can detect the cyst.
