Hi,

I have 18 month old twins, one of whom I was breasfeeding when I underwent a medical abortion done 4 months ago in my 5th week. The follow up visit scan showed an all clear. However I've had 3 heavy period like bleeding episodes with massive clotting of 3 to 4 days every 20 25 days, interspersed by daily spotting and a week of no discharge.

Is it normal to still have heavy bleeding 4 months on? And when will my cycle come back to normal? I am still nursing one of the twins, the other weaned himself off before this happened.

Which leads to my other concern - I feel traumatised by this; this was a very difficult decision and now, I am a bit hazy about whether or not I breasfed my daughter during the day and day after taking the pill. I am extremely concerned about the consequences to her health because of my actions. Should I be worried? Should I watch out for something?

Please advice.

Answer
Since you are breast feeding , the period can be abnormal because your menstrual cycle has not returned to normal.  The period will normalize once you stop breast feeding.

You should talk with your child's physician to have these questions answered.  We recommend not breast feeding for 72 hours.
