Abortion/failed medical abortion

Question
I am from US.
I was 8 weeks 2 days pregnant and went to have a medical abortion. I had the ultrasound and the nurse told me it was twins. I was so confused. I don't know why this made such a difference but it just did. I talked with the counselor but felt so rushed. They came in and asked my decision and I was still crying. I did it. I regretted it while doing it.
If it didn't work could they be ok? They told me if it doesn't work I have to have the surgery but I don't want to if they could be healthy and normal.
I have 2 children and am a good mother. I am single and panicked. But I don't want to if they will be disfigured or in pain all cause of me. I feel guilty enough.
What type of defects can the drugs cause?

Answer
I hope I understand your question.  It seems you have taken the Mifepristone and now need to take the Misoprostol.  The two together are about 95%-99% effective. The usual method is to take 4 Misoprostol and place them between the cheek and gum and after 30 minutes swish and swallow.  The bleeding and cramping starts.
Mifepristone causes birth defects only if the pregnancy continues. It works by lowering progesterone levels and then the lowering of the hormone HCG.  It then causes softening of the cervix and uterine contractions.  Once you take the medication, the pregnancy must be terminated.  Once you take the Misoprostol, the procedure is completed.  You should have bleeding and cramping.  If this happens then you are not likely to have a failed medical abortion.   The studies have only been done in animals and only a few case reports with serious defects.  It is unsure and no one continues the pregnancy because of the risk.

I am sorry you felt rushed and now uncertain.  You do not have to justify why you chose to terminate a pregnancy.  Concentrate on what you have.  Two wonderful children and the fact that you are able to support them.  You should know you are not alone.  This site may help you
