Abortion/No period

Question
Hi Patt,
I had sent you a question before concerning a failed medical abortion. I had the procedure one December 14th 2010 and finally got my period again on January 24th. It was a normal period like any other. My problem now is that I normally have a 28 day cycle I should have started Monday but I didn't and still haven't. I have no signs of starting that I normally do such as being hungry or cranky. I've taken two pregnancy test and they both say negative. Is it normal that I haven't started yet? Could it still be an effect to the procedure?
Thanks, Amanda

Answer
Hello, Amanda,

It is good to hear from you again.

Any abortion is going to disrupt your hormonal balance. Nobody knows how a given woman's body will react, because each woman is different, and it depends on the stage of pregnancy, the method of abortion, and so forth. At the time you last wrote, you wanted to keep the pregnancy, but it looks like that didn't happen. I also don't know if you want to have a child now, or if you want to avoid pregnancy, either. Please let me know what your concerns might be.

When did you last have sex?

You should test three weeks after the last sex, and if that is negative, test again in a week.

Other than that, you are going to have to be patient with your body until it settles down into some kind of balance again. If you have any serious concerns, as I mentioned before, go to a decent doctor. Nobody will be able to tell you over the internet what is going on with your body. Please take care.

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
