Question
Hi Pat, im a young single mother of 2 and just learnt that im preg and hiv positive. I'd like to keep my baby but would never forgive myself if the child is hiv positive I need your advice pls. Thanks Wendy

Answer
Hello, Wendy,

It is possible for a mother who is HIV positive to have a baby who is well. It is known that if the mother takes certain medications for HIV, that the baby will be born healthy. There is a program that the United States is funding, specifically for Africa, that provides medicine for HIV positive people. Please contact the American embassy in South Africa and ask them where to find this help.

There are also natural remedies that will heal a person from AIDS. I will have to do some research. Given how little most people trust natural remedies, I think that you should start with the medical treatment.

Please don't even consider abortion. It can kill you, and then you would have two orphans as well. Since your system is already weakened by the virus, I can't tell you what the odds are that you would survive.

Please keep in touch and let me know if you are able to find this help. I will do the research and find out what the natural remedies are. I can understand your feelings, but many women can never forgive themselves for having an abortion, so you could end up in the same place you are now. Your other two children need you. This baby also needs your help and protection. If you resort to abortion, there is no hope. Don't give up hope. There are answers. Stay safe!

Expertise

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
