Abortion/Follow Up

Question
Hi Pat, thanks for responding about my experience with medical abortion. Its been over 5 months since it happened and all seems to of gone well below despite the heavy bleeding and ER situation. I ended up bleeding a couple of days out of the Er then it finally diminished and I received my period.

What I worry about now, is my ability to get pregnant in the future? Because my abortion was not text book, and I had complications did it affect my uterus? I am on birth control and receive a period every month now but there seems to be more clotty stringy material in it than there used to be? is this normal? Is there any proof that it will be difficult to conceive follow medical abortions?

Answer
Hi, Lindsey,

You're welcome.

Nobody knows what effect a pill abortion can have on a woman's future fertility. You shouldn't be getting clotty stringy material. It sounds like either you still have material in your uterus, or you have an infection, or both. There are silent infections that can occur in the uterus (often called Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) that can prevent pregnancy. It can also make it much more likely you will have a tubal pregnancy, which requires emergency surgery to save your life. Even if you had had a "text book" abortion, you'd still be at risk. There is nothing normal about having an abortion, or about anything that happens afterwards.

The manufacturer of Misoprostol says no pregnant woman should EVER take it. They KNOW it kills pregnant women. They don't want the legal liability. But someone gave you these pills off label, and endangered your life.

You should go see a decent doctor and find out what is going on. Don't go to the person who supplied the pills. He cannot be trusted. He had poor medical judgment to give you such deadly pills to begin with. Yes, these pills kill women. Find someone who knows abortion is bad medicine, and let him do a thorough examination and evaluation.

Please do this right away. Let me know what you find out. Take care.

Expertise

I can help women with the consideration of their decision, and with resources, and I can share my own experiences as the mother of seven and grandmother of eleven. My approach is to show love and concern, and help women work through the issues, emotional, spiritual, practical. I also help women deal with boyfriend and family issues. I am not a doctor, but I have done extensive medical research, so I may be able to help with information. I am female. When you write, if you are or were pregnant, please tell me how far along you were or are, and if you have had an abortion, please tell me what kind. Thank you.

Experience

I have been working with women who are considering abortion for several years. I also work with women who have had abortions. Our family has also experienced adoption, so I can talk about that as well.

Education/Credentials
I am mostly self-taught. I also studied midwifery for awhile. I have spent years doing research on this topic. In fact, I have been doing research and working in this area since the early 1970's. I have been helping women online for a few years, under the guidance of a woman who was formally training in counseling.
